A ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate, moderate protein and high fat diet. In practice, this means a macronutrient split of approximately 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% carbohydrates. This equates to around 25 – 50g of carbohydrate per day in a 2000 kcal diet[1][2]. The keto diet is similar to other low carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet, with an emphasis on moderate protein intake.
