Making spider eggs are fun for the whole family

We decided to share this recipe because it’s a great way to get the whole family involved. Rather than just throwing something into the oven, making these keto spider eggs requires a bit of creativity and is a great way to get your kids involved.

Kids are naturally curious, so getting them involved in creative cooking is great to get them interested in healthy eating at a young age. Even better, these healthy eating habits are more likely to persist into adulthood, setting them up for a healthier future.

These keto spider eggs are great for finger foods at Halloween parties!

The great thing about this recipe is that it is great for both children and adults. In fact, I used this last year as finger food for a Halloween cocktail party and they were a hit! They’re super simple to make and perfect for a small snack at Halloween parties.

And if I say so myself, they’re quite original! Show up with a plate of these bad boys and you’ll be sure to stand out. With most people opting for baked goods or store-bought products, bringing these keto-friendly spider eggs will bring a little something extra to your Halloween party. I’m sure your friends and family will appreciate the creativity and effort!

What better way to embrace the Halloween spirit, right?

Keto-friendly spider eggs are also healthy!

Eggs are nutritious

By using eggs as the main ingredient, you’ll benefit from a load of healthy proteins and fats. Studies have shown that egg protein helps to maintain muscle and prevent against sarcopenia, in the elderly. What’s more, egg protein can also decrease appetite, leading to fewer total calories being consumed.[1]

And the benefits are not just limited to the whites! In addition to the benefits of egg whites, egg yolks provide a healthy source of dietary fat and cholesterol, as well as a number of beneficial bioactive compounds[2].

Olives are rich in MUFAs and other bioactives

The other main ingredient in this recipe are olives. Olives are a keto-friendly food that feature highly in Mediterranean diets, which are known for heart health benefits. This largely stems from the fact the olives are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) as well as vitamins (particularly vitamin E) and fibre[3].

MUFAs have been shown to have cardio-protective effects as well as antioxidant properties. In addition, the vitamin E content of olives helps to protect against inflammation and oxidative damage. And of course we can’t forget about the fibre. Fibre is essential for good gut health and helps to promote a healthy gut bacterial composition[3].

Both healthy and delicious! What’s not to like about these Halloween keto-friendly delights?!

Ingredient list

Ingredients
  • 6 whole eggs
  • Black olives (could be substituted for green)
  • 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

Detailed step by step instructions

1. Boiling the eggs

The first step is to boil the eggs. Each spider will require half an egg so depending on how many you want to make, adjust as needed. We’ll start with a 6 eggs, making 12 keto-friendly spider eggs.

Firstly, you’ll want to add water to a pan and then bring the water to a boil. Once the water reaches boiling point, turn down the heat slightly, in order to cook the eggs just right. Before adding the eggs to water, add a teaspoon of salt. This will help with separation of the membranes, making the eggs peel better, after boiling.

Next, you want to add the eggs to the pan and let them cook for between 8 and 10 minutes, depending on how soft you want the yolks. We recommend 8 minutes for this particular recipe. After cooking for 8 minutes, take the pan off the stove and run under cold water for 1-2 minutes.

When sufficiently cooled, peel the eggs revealing perfecting cooked boiled eggs!

Preparing the eggs

Preparing the eggs

Now that the eggs are cooked and ready to go, let’s get started with the prep!

The first step is to slice the eggs in half. Each half will be used for one spider. So with our recipe of 6 eggs, you’ll end up with 12 half eggs. But we don’t just want to keep the yolks the way they are!

Gently scoop the yolks out of the half eggs and add them all to a small bowl. Next, add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise to add some extra flavour and make a creamy egg yolk mix. To this mixture, add a teaspoon of paprika and half a teaspoon salt and pepper. After adding all the ingredients, mix together into a creamy paste.

Once prepared, add the yolk mixture back into the egg whites to complete the foundation of the dish.

Making the olive spiders

Sliced olives

To make the spiders you’ll need to slice some olives. It’s up to you whether you use black or green olives, but I’ve used black olives because they just feel spookier!

To make the body, slice each black olive in half. Half an olive should be sufficient for each body segment. For the legs, we’ll take a slightly different approach. First, slice the olives into halves. Next, slice each olive half into horizontal strips. Half an olive should probably cover about 4 legs (one half of the spider’s legs), which means you’ll need a whole olive to make 8 spider legs (yup, had to double check but spiders do indeed have 8 legs!).

All in all, that’s 1.5 olives per spider egg!

Complete the spider eggs

Completed spider egg

Now that you have the eggs and yolk prepared and the olives sliced, you just need to assemble the spiders! Add half an olive to the centre of the yolk and then add 4 olive stripes to each side to complete the legs. The mixture of egg yolk and mayonnaise will have made a sticky paste, helping the spiders to stay in place.

To top it all off, apply a sprinkle of paprika to give the dish a slight edge. And there you have it! Halloween, keto-friendly spider eggs completed!
